Specialist private upper gastrointestinal (UGI) surgery in Oxford
-
I am a fellowship trained upper GI surgeon who has chosen to specialise in complex benign upper GI surgery.
-
My background includes extensive training and experience in stomach and oesophagus surgery for benign and malignant conditions.
-
My NHS practice at Oxford University Hospitals spans emergency and elective management of general and UGI surgical conditions in a tertiary referral centre, meaning I am ideally placed to help treat simple and more complex conditions as listed below.

Gastro-oesophageal reflux
Gastro-oesophageal reflux disease (GERD) occurs when stomach contents flow back into the oesophagus due to a weak or dysfunctional lower oesophageal sphincter.
This is often associated with a hiatus hernia, where part of the stomach moves into the chest.
While medical treatment works for many people, some elect to undergo specialist surgical treatment to control their reflux.
Hiatus hernia
A hiatus hernia is where the top of the stomach slides upwards into the lower chest due to a weakness in the muscular passage through which the gullet (oesophagus) passes.
Small hernias are very common and can cause reflux.
Very large hernias can cause significant symptoms and surgical repair can often significantly improve someone's quality of life.

Achalasia
Achalasia is a rare but significant condition where the muscles which push food down the gullet fail and the sphincter muscle at the bottom of the gullet fails to open.
It causes difficulty swallowing, pain and weight loss.
Investigation is complex and decision making needs to be tailored to the individual.
Upper GI endoscopy (OGD)
I offer upper GI endoscopy as part of work up for surgery or as a standalone investigation.
I am an experienced endoscopist with training in assessment of Barrett's oesophagus, the "pre-malignant" stomach and hiatus hernias.
I provide endoscopic interventions including dilatation and PEG insertion.

Complex gallbladder surgery
I am an experienced "hot" cholecystectomy surgeon, meaning I routinely perform gallbladder surgery in patients with acute inflammation in the gallbladder.
These operations are more challenging and higher risk, and I am comfortable offering safe, effective gallbladder surgery in all settings.
